Stitches & Leather

Here are a few treasures of the Southwest and South of the Border that we often see everyday.

Free People is currently selling some of these vintage leather handbags... but checkout your local Savers & Goodwill for similar authentic items.

I love the embroidery so many of the Elderly women have on their clothing.  So intricate yet simple.

How they dance in these without us Sisters needing shin guards, I'll never know, but they do, and very well!  Adds a little extra spin to their pivots and turns.

George Dieter Build Update

We spent this past weekend at the build again helping out on the Painting crew.  What a joy it has been to watch it all come together.  It is truly one of the most beautifully decorated buildings I've ever seen.  It has a Tuscan theme and is simple but gorgeous!  Check out my mum's site for recent photos: http://www.floursandfleurs.wordpress.com/  The number of brothers and sisters is slowly diminishing as the projects wrap up.  So working alongside the smaller groups has made you feel even more close to one another.  Not much longer now....and we'll be having our meetings inside.

Artist of the Week

(Information From Wikipedia)

Julius Rolshoven (1858-1930)

Rolshoven was born and raised in Detroit. At 18 he went to New York City to study at the Cooper Union Art School, then the Düsseldorf Academy, then continued on to Munich, studying under the Kentucky-born artist Frank Duveneck in his Venice and Florence schools, becoming one of the "Duveneck Boys".
Finally Rolshoven returned to the United States at the beginning of World War I.

By 1916 Rolshoven had settled in the American southwest, setting up a studio in Santa Fe's Governor's Palace. He was also an early member of the Taos Society of Artists. From 1920 until his death he moved back and forth among his three residences, Florence, Detroit and Santa Fe.
He died on shipboard in the Atlantic.

One of his beautiful art pieces are located here at the El Paso Museum of Art as well!

"Can We Build It? Yes We Can"

This past weekend was the last weekend of the official 3 weekend RBC build at George Dieter...now it will continue with the use of all of us local brothers and sisters finishing up.  The inside of the hall is very far along but there is still much work to be completed outside.  The cementing continues, as well as the landscaping, and the painting.

While painting along with the brothers and sisters the outside fence railings we heard someone ask, "what are you doing?"  We looked down and noticed a woman dressed as we were and didn't realize at first that she had strolled over from the store next door to see what the 500 volunteers running around like busy ants were doing.  We were able to give a nice witness and were thrilled to see that those in the community are taking notice.

It will probably be another several weeks till it is truly completed. But it is coming along nicely. For some pics check out my mum's site http://www.floursandfleurs.wordpress.com/

Welsh Week One

We have been having an abosolutely lovely time with our dear friends from Wales.  We've tortured them with loads of El Pasoan treasures, long car rides, and late nights of story telling.  I hope my brothers are taking plenty of photos!  What a joy to spend time with our brothers and sisters from around the world!
